Tango Cherries – Tango Spirit, 2016, Gut Frohberg (Germany)
Every year 2 german tango schools (TTMS, Berlin, and Alma en Vuelo, Leipzig) organize tango vacations together. A one week vacation called Tango Spirit is held at an old big farm-house, called Gut Frohberg. It is located near beautiful Dresden, and many of the attendees come there every year to learn and relax.
I’ve been curious about it, since it is very different to tango marathons or festivals. Why do people take vacations and come to this rural place, which is not by the sea, nor in a foreign beautiful city?
I learned that it is all about atmosphere, community, friendliness, attention, love, and freedom.
The vacations take place since many years, and most of the people coming are regular students of the schools. Seems they love and admire their teachers a lot … In addition people come from different places in Germany and some even from abroad. Mostly the attendees come in couples, are middle-aged, some bring their kids. Over all it is a very quiet and comfortable vibe there. People sleep at the venue in rather basic accommodation, they eat together and enjoy the big yard, where you can sit and chat, or read, eat, and enjoy company. If you seek rest there is a beautiful big wild green area around, with benches to read your book or watch birds, and with an enchanted little lake hidden in the woods. Jump in, have a swim, and enjoy the quiet nature!
Some people camp in this green area, and hammocks in between apple trees bespeak the “garden Eden” like feeling.
Usually there are 4 teaching couples, the last years it has been Susanne & Rafael from TTMS, Angela & Andreas from alma en vuelo, Martin & Mauricio from Buenos Aires and another couple which changes year by year. The level of dancing is from beginners to higher
intermediate dancers, but people don’t take tango as serious as some marathon dancers do. Tango is a significant part of their lives, but family, meeting friends, and relaxing are as important ingredients of this week as it is the dancing.
The teachers are very accessible, there are no maestro tables in the yard, teachers and students mingle, kids run around, it feels like a nice holiday camp.
Every night there is a milonga, sometimes in the afternoons there is as well some outdoor dancing in the yard. Some milongas are with a motto, like the white milonga on the weekend, but mostly it is a very easy setting, good wooden floor, and every night there is a show, and sometimes life music. The kids are taken care all the days by qualified staff, and in one milonga they do a show case they rehearsed in the week before. Proud parents and applauding audience are guaranteed!
Beside different brands of tango clothes and shoes are on sale, you can book a massage, and teachers offer private lessons as well. Everyone can take as many classes as it suits him or her, many or few, lazy or busy days, all is possible here.
I guess this little paradise makes people coming again and again, now I understood!
