Tango Cherries – Westcoast Marathon 2014, Gothenburg, Sweden

Wonderful view to the archipelago
Wonderful view to the archipelago

Traveling to marathons is so nice because it brings you to locations you would most probably never have considered to travel to. So I arrived in Gothenburg without any idea about it, except that I knew 2 mayor facts: 1) it’s in Sweden, 2) I have a good friend living there.

Like most of the times when I travel alone my plan has been to walk through the city center on friday at daytime, to explore and let myself go with the flow – but like often in life planning is just replacing fortune by error.

After changing my hotel because of too much discomfort in my originally chosen on early friday morning one (I spare you the details), I ended up with some friends on a wonderful boat tour through the archipelago (lots of smaller and bigger islands closed to Gothenburg).

You can take the tram until the final destination and then jump on a regular public boat. Most of them are trimarans, and they run very fast, it’s such a pleasure to move with them.

The islands are somehow kitschy, but beautiful until you drop. All these little summer cottages, in red and white, peaceful villages, friendly people.

In this warm, calm and friendly mood we continued the evening, coming to a marathon of friends. No frills, no spectacular show-offs, no ice-cold faces of princesses and kings of an imagined elite tango crowd – just friends.

Greetings and hugs, talks and dinners, pre and after party all settled for a

hearty welcome, feel-good dancing and relaxed enjoying. No bumping on the floor, enough space for all, healthy food (but surely with chocolate and cookies!), and this odd calmness and happiness, what my german brain does not have a real word for.

But I’ve been floating through the days and enjoyed this Swedish (Scandinavian?) aura to the max.

So if you need a familiar and cozy atmosphere to feel good and to enjoy dancing, come to Gothenburg next year. Don’t ask me how they do it, but: you will leave your problems behind almost automatically, and just being the person you are you will feel loved.
